That's exactly how I taught my son to drive his Neon 5speed. The second 
thing to do is get them to a couple autocrosses after they can drive it 
well. He has improved his driving so much over the last year. He's now 
in the points lead in his class this year. (See photo I added to my PVGP 
web page below)
