Reading the thread about kids and stickshifts reminded me about my Mom getting
a new car with Auto. Mom drove us around in a 1957 Chevy wagon with 3 on the
tree, no AC, no radio, no seat belts, none of the comforts that are now
standard on todays cars. Anyway in 1969 after much pleading to Dad, Mom got
her wish. A new Buick LeSabre with all the goodies of the day. It was a jewel
of american iron. Being used to shifting the gears in the old chevy on her
first trip in the Buick, Mom started out from the traffic light pulling the
shifter all the way down into low gear and then went to up shift, slammed on
the power brakes, about the same time she jammed the car into park. Lucky for
me riding in the passenger side she had made me strap in with the seat and
shoulder belts. In the next few months she did get the hang of the automatic
and the warantee fixed the transmission she destroyed.
