It looks like I can remove the rear bearing cap with the backplate in place; 
it's in plain sight. The front one looks like it's under some sort of cross 
plate. I'll have to double check my manual to see where it is.
I saw somewhere on the web (maybe Chris Kotting's site) a procedure for 
changing 1500 bearings with the engine in the car, so I figure I can use this 
method and not have to completely remove the crankshaft.
