Race engines used in race circumstances usually don't have heaters and usually use thermostadt blanking sleeves with the cylinder head/water pump bypass valve "blocked" to improve coolant flow. And also, most racers will flow the water back to the thermstadt housing from the heater tap valve via the right side of the engine. There is a picture on a page in Stapleton's book showing this.
