Frank-
These are actually a "large electrode"
(as opposed to "fine" electrode") aircraft
design, and have been used in aircraft
piston engines for eons.
I have never tried them in automotive
applications but obviously they "work"
in accordance with your experience.
How do you gap these mothers, anyway?
