I had this problem recently. I have a '71 with a GM alternator conversion
done by a previous owner. I assume you have an original style alternator, so
I don't know if my solution will be of any help. But since the smog pump was
gone from mine, I made a very simple bracket and mounted the alternator to
thermostat housing. Had to get a replacement adjustment arm. I was lazy and
just ordered a generic one from Jegs, but you could probably find one at a
local shop or a junkyard. Had to shorten the one I bought anyway, and I think
I really need to shorten it som more - the end of it is punching a hole in my
heater air duct. I got the idea looking at pics of a similar installation one
a car for sale on eBay, so I can't take all the credit / blame!
