I don't think there is an "average" lifespan. I have had them last anywhere from
100 miles to nearly 50,000. I think it depends on how you drive and the quality
of the parts used. In addition to shifting to neutral at stop lights, I was also
told, when I first became enamored with these little beasts (back when Bugeyes
were in the dealers' showrooms), that they should always be started in neutral.
