Well....
In stock set-ups, there really is no "rear
main seal" (per se) in the Series A engines, Greg......it's more of a
rear main
"oil control scheme" or system.
There are aftermarket rear main seal kits
(Paul A.!!....where are you?) which are
available but I believe the crankshaft
(tail) must be polished to accept these.
Rivergate incorporates these also, in their
aluminum rear engine plates (part of their
Datsun 5 speed set-up).
The "other side" of "oil control" in Series
A motors (often overlooked) is adequate
crankcase "breathing" or "ventilation" with
respect to "positive" crankcase pressure.
Matter of fact, once the immediately fore-
going is adequately attended to, oil leakage in this area is often
reduced to
a very reasonable "trickle" in even stock
"rear oil control" set-ups.
At the very minimum, if you are not running a PCV set-up (your engine's
best friend in this particular respect)
you will need a minimum of two 1/2"
"vents" to handle crankcase pressure.
One normally comes off the front timing
cover ("lower" engine"), the other off the
valve cover ("upper" engine). On those
blocks having a plate covering the "hole"
for the original mechanical fuel pump,
a 1" or 3/4" "vent" can be fabricated for
additional "ventilation", as well.
Don't forget to "cap" these "vents" with
a K&N filter....they "breath" both ways!!
