I had a similar problem with a '77 Toyota Celica that had been off the road for a while...turned out the gas tank had rusted and the fine rust was in the gasoline. It would drive until enough rust covered the fuel inlet screen in the tank to starve the engine. Once shut off the rust would fall back off and "un-clog" the inlet and it would start again. Replaced the gas tank and in tank fuelpump/filter screen. My little sister drove it for 6 years after that with-out any problems. Dean Swanson '62 A.H.
