Dave, and others, it is not at all unusual for a water pump to leak after a
long 'nap'. Especially the cast iron older style. Don't get too upset about
it, give it a little time to reseal. Keep an eye on it. If the pump did not
leak when you parked the car, and you haven't hit the pump shaft with a
hammer, then it will often soon seal itself. Water pump seals on these
vintage of cars, are a carbon rings which butts up to and rides against the
impeller. The impellers are cast iron and will rust a bit over time. Often
everything will bed-in in an hour or so. Newer style pumps, and well
remanufactured pumps, use a ceramic cartridge seal which eliminates much of
this problem.
