An alternator is a better solution. However, Trish wrote that a prime
motivator is money. I believe she is an undergrad on a very limited
budget. Cleaning lenses and connectors is about as inexpensive as you
can get.
Another alternative, and clearly one that only works if the charging
system is up for it, is to run all the time on high beam. My driving
environment is full of aggressively stupid people; I run high beams
day and night. In 5 years only twice have I been dipped.
