Hi there everybody. I'm still assembling my '71 Midget, and whilst debugging
the electrics, came across a problem that I couldn't figure out. As usual, I
appeal to the collective wisdom of the list. Since I don't understand the
circuit, it's kind of hard to describe the issue, but I'd like to give it a
try and then have you folks tell me where I have gone wrong. Here's the
story:
Turn signals don't work. All other aspects of the lighting system seem to
work properly, including the emergency flashers. I can jumper power from the
emergency light switch to the LGN wire off the turn signal flasher (bypassing
the turn signal flasher, going directly to the wire that goes to the turn
signal switch) and make the turn signals work via the emergency flasher. That
implies that the turn signal switch is good. I suspect that the turn signal
flasher might be bad, but can't figure out how power is supposed to get to the
turn signal flasher, so I can't really say whether the circuit is good up to
that point. My guess on how the flasher is supposed to get power would be via
the emergency light switch - though that doesn't seem to make sense, either.
I have a 1982 Haynes manual where the wiring diagram differs slightly from the
1975 "Complete Official", and so that isn't helping, either.
I don't know if these items help, but I have confirmed: all connections are
correct per the color code and the wiring diagram (Haynes). All wires appear
to have continuity where they should. There is only one "hot" wire going to
the emergency flasher switch, and none of the other terminals on the emergency
light switch have power going to them when the switch is in the "off"
position.
Please share with me the benefits of your experience, either on-list or off.
Last weekend I did succeed in figuring out that the fuel pump needs to be
grounded through it's chassis; and after the turn signals are working I'll
start setting up the engine/distributor timing. Then, add fuel, and see what
happens! TIA for your help.
