Hi Lon:
Sure. Hot Rodders have done it for years. It does require a steady hand,
sharp shears, and maybe a utility knife or punch. Try to match the material
somewhat to whatever is already there--neoprene to rubber, cork to cork, etc.
Rubber or neoprene gasket material is available by the sheet. Pep Boys, Home
Despot, or Industrial Supplier (much larger quantities and better quality
usually for not much more money). There are sometimes tabs on the prefab
gaskets to fit into slots in body or part to keep the whole thing in place so
screws, etc, wont have to try to force their way thru the gasket material.
Of course, you could cut the gasket with holes and hold the whole thing in
place during assembly with rubber cement. This will peel right off if you
need to take it apart.
I'm not familiar with crafting foam. With foams, they have to compress to
fit and still be tight enough to form a water seal. The same assembly
directions should apply.
