don't take this as a position just happen to know the answer to one of your
questions. violent crime in US is staggeringly higher than in Britain, the
numbers for murders being something like thirty some hundred in Britain last
year and 64,000 in the US. The US has extraordinary levels of crime. In a
speech in China Clinton was asked why he was always bitching about China's
human rights records when the US had crime thousands of times more often
despite it's smaller population. The student who asked the question wanted
to know how the US's human rights record is if you consider not getting raped
and murdered all the time a human right and Clinton, to his credit (I hate
him) said that was a good point. I don't know the reasons for our high crime
but it is pretty much the worst in the world, even at the new lower levels.
PS this does not make me anti gun I own more than one and learned to use them
in the army as a conscientious non-objector in a combat unit. "Never killed
anyone but I hurt someone's feelings once" (DeNiro in Ronin)
