For those to whom this sounds far-fetched, it's because of the pumping
losses when the throttle is, uh, throttling the air flow. BMW is working
on a really neat bit where the intake valve is adjustable enough that
they REMOVE the throttle all together, and output is controlled by cam
timing. Very cool, I think.
