The chemical that goes in the hot tank is sodium hydroxide (NaOH). You mix it with water in a ratio of 1/2 lb. of NaOH to 1 gallon of water. Be sure to buy the industrial grade NaOH, as it's much cheaper than that used for chemistry departments in colleges.
