Tommy,
If you cleaned the plugs and after a few minutes of running, they were
sooty again, then I suspect the mixture is the problem. If the plugs are
wet in appearance, then they could be getting oil fouled, causing the
misifiring. But, I'm guessing from your description that the soot is dry in
appearance, indicating carbon fouling. That is typically caused by an
overly rich mixture.
