all of the "A" series engines can be made to run incredibly well! there are
some weak link components to be avoided here and there, as there are some
neat performance oriented items that were used in standard production.
which engine is best? come on! that's like asking if you like chevy, ford
or chrysler here in the states at a pick up truck convention! certain
engines are chosen due to "it's what you have" or it is what you want it to
look like upon completion, or you want the most displacement you can get! a
real good cam and some creative porting on a stock head along with some
porting in the intake and exhaust manifold can yeild a very stock looking
engine in a pristine restoration that is rather enthusiastic , and no one
will be the wiser! even extensive carb modifications can done without
changing anything visible to the trained observer's eye! now if ya want
headers and a cool type of intake and a nifty carb set up ...way cool! but
i have seen some radical "A" series engines and they were not all 1275's.
the full race 948's being built to scca national level specs are pretty hot
little motors!
chuck.
just ask the MGB drivers who were trying to blow off my old bugeye at the
rally! they ran out of gears to shift to and i was just getting into
winding out third .....passing them. and pulling up through the hills they
could not loose me , i was glued to their bumper waiting for a straight long
enough to safely pass them. (there were a bunch of very poor chances but i
was willing to wait for a safe long stretch to be a bit frisky... :) )
