I took the Midget on its longest drive this evening since I cleaned the
cooling system and changed the thermostat to a 160 degree one. I drove about
12 miles and everything was fine. Drove about 3 more miles and looked down
at the temp guage to find it creeping rapidly toward "H". I pulled over,
loosened the pressure cap, which released much boiling in the tank and the
radiator, and when it had stopped spewing, I took off the plastic cap and put
about a half gallon of water into her. She drove fine, guage cool, for about
15 more miles when she overheated again. To the side of the road, loosened
the cap, much boiling, then add nearly a gallon of water. Where the hell is
the water going? Checked the oil--it is fine--no water there. The overflow
tank is FULL. Maybe it is going there and spilling over?
Anyway, I have a question for 1500 guys regarding the routing of the
radiator hoses. As I am trying to analyze the problem, and standing in my
driveway, I noticed that I have the big hose that comes from the left
bottomof the radiator connected correctly to the top of the thermo cover. On
the other side of the thermo there are TWO outlets, one upper one that comes
from the cover, and a lower one that comes from BELOW the thermostat. I
have the hose that comes from the top right of the radiator going to the top
outlet, or the one that comes out of the thermo cover, and the smaller hose
that routes to the heater block coming from the LOWER outlet.
As I think about the routing, it seems that the engine is out of the loop
with the way I have it routed. It seems like a dumb thing to do, if I got
the hoses reversed (shut up Ed), but I am stretching for an answer to the
sudden overheating problems of this usually cool running engine. Could one
of you guys whose 1500 engines run cool please check your routing to see
whether I need to reverse the two hoses? Or if you have a pic you could send
me that shows the coolant hose routing. I have two manuals, but neither
have a good picture of the engine with hoses attached.
Thanks!
