I noticed this was not on the Spridget list. This looks like an important
enough post for all of us to be aware of. I don't think we can take safety
checking too far! Glad the sender is OK!

Subject: [midgetsprite] rear wheel steering!
g'day from down under..........
some time ago ( 3-4 weeks) I asked the good people on the list what was the
most reasonable cause for the back end of my mk4 sprite to want the front end
of the car to turn left when lifting off of the throttle.
My initial thoughts were confirmed by the many kind responses and helpful
replies that I received, and both the rear springs and the associated rubber
bits were replaced...........
Ladies and Gents... if you have a similar problem with a car that you may
own, please also consider that the back axle tubes may be cracked. I have just
got out of hospital, after a 1 week stay ,fully catered and fresh sheets each
night, pretty nurses and all that---but not a visit that I want anyone else to
have to have.
The back axle tube was cracked from inbetween two of the studs that hold the
diff in ,to the back of the strap bracket,in roughly a semi-circular shape.
My car has never been raced or put under any stress of that type in its life (
it has been in our family since it was 7 months old--it is a 1969 car).
Both of the "experts" here in Perth ( the Aussie one) had never seen such a
thing before, but these things are getting older all the time and perhaps these
things will occur more frequently.
The car is fixable, the memory of going upside down at about 100kms per hour on
our one and only freeway will last a long time.
once again thank you to all and sundry for your help in the past ,and in
advance for the future..........
chris broughton.
