Mike,
Try cleaning and opening the points to .020 and see if the problem
persists. Also, look at the plastic rubbing block. If it's not sitting
square with the cam lobe faces, you can get the same problem; points opening
to different gaps can cause spitting and sputtering off idle. While the cap
is off, take the plugs out, pull the rotor, and disc the dist power wire.
Spin the engine over while watching the points plate. If it rocks as the cam
revolves, the point plate rivet may/probably has a worn spot. This affects
off idle performance by preventing the vacuum advance from running smoothly.
Pull the diz, pull the point plate and invert the plate. You will see a
rivet in a "kidney" shaped slot. Take a pair of vise grips and turn the rivet
90* . If the track is not worn too badly, you should be ok. Don't forget to
undo the two halves of the point plate and grease the "bearing" surface with
a dab of white lithium,
Also, while you have access, lube the flyweight pivots, loosen the screw
under the rotor a couple turns and gently lift the cam assy then shoot some
lube under the screw head. Lift and drop the cam assy a few times and repeat
lube 3- 4 times. The mechanical advance advances the camlobes and the
rotor ahead of the points plate, and if it binds, you will get spitting and
sputtering.
Last but not least, make sure your vacuum advance diaphragm is intact by
sucking on the vacuum line and watching the points plate move and return
while the cap is off. Mark Childers Union Jack Spares & Repairs Virginia
