Now that is what the instructions say to do. They say "Even in cases where
the water cooling is marginal, placing to cooler in this position will have
hardly any effect on water temperature. The sheer volume of air passing
through the cooler ensures that the air is only heated a few degrees; not
enough to affect the water radiator performance, and as the oil cooler is a
more efficient device for extracting heat from the engine the over all
effect is helpful." They go on to suggest that the closer to the rad the
better (1/4") as if it is any further, the air will become turbulent and not
flow through the rad very well.
However, after I asked the question I went and looked, always a good idea
;-) There is not really a good place to put it right in front of the rad. I
am also running an electric fan and have it mounted in front of the rad. I
am thinking, if there is room, which I am not sure there is, to move the fan
to behind the rad and put the oil cooer in front. On the other hand, there
is this nice flat spot behind the bumper and in front of the wire grill.
That is not really in front of the rad as the bumper is right there so it
would not get a lot of direct air flow, there is a lot of air swirling
around in there. So I don't think that would hurt too much, but it wouldn't
block the rad. Or maybe hang it between the horns?
I do not want to put it where the heater duct is, as I drive the car all
year with the top down. So I do kinda use the heater.
