I haven't followed all the auction discussion but I have luck with two 
approaches.

1. Bid the most I would pay and forget about it.

2. Bid at the last minute and bid very high. Most snipers bid in small 
increments and bid at the last minute. By the time they submit a bid that 
does not take the lead, it is generally too late for them to post another.
