My 57 ZB Magnette was last rebuilt in Aug '67 and has been purring along on
unleaded since 84 when they "got the lead out" without the first trace of a
problem.
I had the head off to clean the pistons and replace the valve guide seals
during it's routine 33 year scheduled maintenance It was a waste of time -
no wear no burned valves, no eroded seats and no coked up pistons.
My B runs a "lead head" which has been milled, and early 9.5 pistons -
it gets a regular thrashing at every opportunity and will run just fine
even on 87 Octane (long road trips) with static timing set at a nominal 10* .
I've had the head off twice in the past 5 years, and the valve seats are
still like new. I confess that I do use NOS Street fuel additive when I'm
flogging the throttle simply because it provides seat of the pants
improvement and I can run a lot more advance in the summer without having to
watch the temp gage. Mark C
