  you would not have to remove a leaf if you use the right stuff...like 
stuff made for the job.  I am sure you can get elsewhere but Restoration 
Supply Company in Nevada, (775)825-5663  has what they call  "Poly-Slide" 
available in 3 widths.  I quote from the catalog :
   "Channel shaped poly sheet inserts between spring leaves for a smooth ride"
   I can't vouch for the smooth ride since the car is not on the road yet 
but I think it is what you are looking for.
