I have shipped a few trannys across states, and an engine and trans over
seas.
The best way to ship a trans is to make a wooden crate. Some cheap 2x4s
(garbage grade or "cull" lumber from any lumber yard is just about free)
and some no frills plywood.
Lay 2 2x4s on the ground, lay the tranny on them so it does not rock,
use 2 more 2x4s for the top, box all 6 sides with plywood. It can't move
and will survive falling off a truck.
If it's going out of country, be sure to cut an inspection hole in the
box large enough for a Customs agent to stick a flashlight in. You can
make a simple flip flap with a screw and a bent nail.
Of course I am a carpenter by trade but anybody can build a box. And for
about $10-12 bucks tops.
You should have seen my wooden box to ship a crankshaft!
