Just a couple more data points. The Corvair community has used these
for years (since a standard GM 6 cyl version fits). The "first
generation" had a rash of failures... we think due to the excess heat
that a Corvair distributor is subject to. Pertronix then improved the
system and now failures are extremely rare.
On the Corvair, the entire point plate is replaced. The system works
GREAT with a poor distributor... that's why I first went with it. In my
TR6 I even had a distributor rotor contact the cap and destroy them
both... but the Pertronix still works fine.
In LBC's, I've had nearly every brand of electronic ignition fail, but
not a Pertronix (yet).
To me, the main advantage is the ability to run a hotter coil and wider
plug gap without burning up a set of points every 6000 miles.
