I use a bunch of clear Rubbermaid 'shoeboxes' for smaller items; almost
everything, when broken down to a component form, will fit inside one of
these. Boxes are labeled on the outside with a removeable Avery diskette
label (big enough to write on). Label info includes the part
description, it's source, and, if applicable, when refurbished. Larger
items are stored on the shelf, covered in plastic. I prefer to store
them degreased and refurbished if possible (cleaned up, painted, rebuilt,
etc).
Items that I can't refurbish right away are stored as is as I think the
grunge provides some protection. Degreased items that are subject to
rust, but can't be painted / waxed are protected with a coat of fogging
oil (for example, a head's combustion chambers) or similar (a MC). Items
that can't be stored on the shelves go overhead or in the shed. My
shelves are separated with one each for the Midget, MGB, and Ford.
I've thought about making an inventory spreadsheet (using Excel) which
would show the part description, source, date refurbished, and location:
ie, Midget 1 = Midget shelving, shelf number one. If someone was using
more than one set of shelves, then Midget A1 = Midget shelving A, shelf
number 1, etc; these could even be broke down to the placement on the
shelf by adding another digit. I'll probably just go as simple as
possible as I don't have that many parts, but I do need to keep track of
where I hide things from myself.
