Well, there you go!
I peeked a little further into the Haynes and see that " ... the rack will
have to be aligned on USA and Canada models, or on Midget MkIII cars from
GAN5-11 ... and 1500 cc cars" if the shim is missing or the car is
accidented.
I do not profess to have read the alignment instructions.
