Finally, after all these weirdo problems, I drove the car today. I had
almost forgotten what it felt like.
:-) <--- big grin
Anyhoo, the car sounds excellent. Lots of power, great at reasonable
highway speeds (although the speedometer isn't hooked up, so I have no idea
of the actual speeds, but I didn't ever hit the fast lane), smooth...
It turned out that not only had the head warped after being machined (it sat
around awhile) but the area on the block around the stud holes had pulled up
a bit at some point too, which explains the blowing head gaskets. The car
also now has a distributor that came out of an MGA or something. It's
definitely different, but the car runs great.
To-do list:
1. Rewire the rigged cooling fan so it isn't running any time the battery
is connected
2. The radiator has been rebuilt improperly at some point and needs to be
replaced (the pipes are coming out the wrong places), so the temperature
tends to approach hot
3. The headlight switch came apart in my hand tonight
4. Mount the top/hood/whatever
5. Tires and brakes
6. The gear shifter turns rotates in a circle when you try to shift, so
only 3rd and 4th are easily accessible
All in all, though, I'm still psyched! Thanks for everybody's help and
patience listening to all my questions and mistakes.
