At the Dixon,CA all-British car show two weeks ago, I spoke to a fellow who
was selling a poor condition bugeye shell on a trailer for a few hundred
bucks. No interest on my part, but I did stop to talk with the man for a
bit. Over the course of our conversation he mentioned that there were THREE
bugeyes in his dad's shed. "Oh really" sez I, where might this be? Turns
out its only a few miles from my house. He gave no name or decent
directions, so I've spent the last two weeks cruising the area on my bike
introducing myself to the local residents and asking about "this older
gentleman with three bugeyes in a farm shed".
Yesterday I found a Spitfire owner in the area who suggested it might be the
fellow 'at the corner'. Got his name, called him up, and YES! He said I
could come by and check them out. By the end of the week I should have a
report for the list on the elusive "Shed Sprites of Davis". I can only hope
they are in better shape than the gnarly looking shell the son was selling.
It was lots of fun just looking for him, the thrill of the chase and all
that. I'd bet the rest of the saga will be an anticlimax.
