I have found that a good socket set is indispensible.  The first thing I did 
when I got my project was go to Sam's and buy a nice socket set of GM Mr. 
Goodwrench  for about $70. They are not Snap-on's but then I am not a 
pro--and they are not el cheapos in construction either.  Point is, you need 
a really good and dependable set of tools--not necessarily THE BEST, but 
better than the unplated "300 pieces for $29.95" specials.
And as soon as you can afford it, an adequate air compressor with tools is a 
great addition.  I use mine for many tough jobs.
