There is no cylinder compression exposed to the air pump injection rail.
When working, air is fed into the exhaust port behind the valves to provide
oxygen to burn the residual fuel expelled during the exhaust stroke. The
only real advantage to disconnecting the air injection system is to
eliminate the parasitic loss from the air pump and a cooler exhaust system,
but if the air pump has vanes in it and is spinning, you are going to get
the loss in HP anyway, even if you are venting it to the atmosphere. Anyway,
back in the days when we had to get our pre-73 cars (mine is really a
re-bodied 69) I just unscrewed the plugs I had in the air injection ports,
bolted on the smog sh*t, got inspected, came home, and reversed procedure.
Good for two more years.
