This is an excellent point! In the event of a collision there would indeed
be a tremendous chance of rupturing the fuel line, and having the line inside
the passenger compartment could be fatal. This is enough to route it to the
outside of the cockpit. Especially if you have an electric fuel pump without
a cutoff that would keep pulsing jets of gasoline into the compartment.
