My Sprite has a 286 cam, 45 DCOE on 40mm main venturi, sports coil and
electronic ign. It has no cold start device (choke) and will start on the
key after 3-5 pumps on the throttle when it is below freezing as much as you
like.
However, if it has stood more than a week in the winter it takes a lot of
cranking, more than 3 weeks I am happy if it starts at all and even then on 3
cylinders.
On cold weather I think the fuel drops out of the air (once the air is
inducted) more readily than in warm weather so you need a lot of mixture
enrichment - and if the mixture is rich enough so it doesn't drop out of the
air it can be so rich the spark has trouble lighting it.
I have no idea whatsoever why my car is such a swine to start when it has
stood for a couple of weeks in the winter.
