Hi Derf.
There is a spiral on the shaft that will spin the oil back to the pan.
There should also be a end cap of some kind, it fits real tight against the
crank shaft.  Between the two of these 99% of all oil is recycled.  Notice I
said 99%, If you don't use a PCV then when you turn the engine off, the
captured oil drains out on to the floor.  Don't ask how I know, just be
content that I do.
