This guy emailed me with this question.
I'm stumped.
Hello
I hope you can help me. My name is Martin Johnson. I am the proud new
owner of a 1959 Sprite. It's a basket case, but its relatively rust
free and very straight and solid for a car that's been parked in a field
since 1970. I plan to do a frame-off restoration on it. I have done
this before with good results on three English cars, and two American
cars. Anyway, here's my problem: The engine code doesn't match
anything for a Sprite or MG in the resources I've accumulated. The
alpha-numeric engine code is: MPJM H 1075. Have you any idea what
engine series that is? Visually, it appears to be a 948. It has an
AUSTIN nameplate on the valve cover, it has a 948cc-style mechanical
fuel pump, There are no carbs, but the intake is 1 ¼ with a heat shield
ala 1048. Ideally, I'd like to know what it is before I start taking it
apart and measuring the pistons and the crank, and comparing data.
There's got to be a smart way to do this before tear-down operations
commence. Thanks in advance!
