Tranny rebuilds are not that hard.
Get 2 books, one being the Bentley, the other Haynes or any other.
READ the WHOLE chapter twice, make notes, enlarge the picture and study
how the interlock balls go.
This is my bigest problem, the interlock balls, screw them up and no
shift!
Also when you take apart gears and sleeves, pay carful attention as to
which way was up. I have also 180ed a few things and again, no shift!
New bearings, shims, gaskets are a must. Gears if worn or missing teeth.
I have had good results swapping out bad synchros with good ones from 2
or 3 trannys.
Never mix rib case and smooth case, they are different.
The first trans will take you all day, after that 4 hrs, 3rd and 4th,
about 2 hours.
No special toos are needed except for some good pointy needle nose
plyers, a set of dental picks and patience.

It sounds like you dropped you balls on the first gear. They are speing
loaded and if the gear was overshot, the balls spring out. This means a
complete teardown.
Replacing the balls/springs is the only 2 person job on the tranny. My
wife is very good at it now. Or there is a service tool but I hold 2
balls, she holds 1 and I push it into position. Not that hard.

Good luck
