For those who care: The Garrett (Garrett became AiResearch, which became 
AlliedSignal) T3 is a good machine, with gas engine reliability of around 
100K miles assuming the manufacturer has provided a decent oiling system.  On 
turbodiesels like the Mercedes, the T3's have gotten over 300,000 (yes I 
typed that right) miles (cooler exhaust gas).  This is one of the most common 
turbochargers in the world, and I recently spoke with a large truck refurb 
house that pays only $300 for a rebuild (I was quoted $700 when I had my 
Lotus Esprit; the shop looked at it and deemed it fine and not in need of 
rebuild).
