Hey Spridget Friends:
I have been following this thread with some interest and have heard a number
of people on here and other places talk of grunting the engine and tranny out
a la Paul Bunyon, using their backs and muscles. I dunno bout that guys. Not
for me! For one thing, the angles you have to bend to accomplish some of that
is counter the proper lifting position for a healthy back. I had back surgery
back in '81--extrememly successful--6 months later I created a tough
backcountry Wilderness program that I led for 18 years carrying heavy packs
and climbing impossible ridges--and I know the agony of living day to day with
a bad disc. It can happen suddenly and without much effort, but lifting
engines and transmissions is surely a means to that end. It just aint worth
it!
Besides, mankind has come a long way in the use of simple machines, like
screws, levers, wheels (actually a form of the lever). And some bright guy put
it all together and called it a "hoist". That not only saves the back and the
backs of those around us, usually family members who innocently want to help,
but it allows you to pay full attention to the exorcism of the nasty engine
and/or tranny. Testosterone notwithstanding. I get enough testosterone
leakage amidst the smoke and sparks of the welding process. And the "Hoist"
is only a rental fee of $25. Back surgery is probably. . . ahhhh. . .about. .
.uh. . .$10,000--would that be a liberal estimate? Not counting the agony and
the time being an invalid (the toughest thing for me to do).
Without a hoist? Let it sit and defeat you for a week. Life with a smirking
Spridget is a whole lot more pleasant than life with a slipped disc.
