Hi List,

I went out and bought a secondhand DGAV carb from the car car breakers yard
today (it was the only one too). No Frank, this is not for my car.

I bought it because I want to find out how it works, how to calibrate it and
so forth. If anyone wants to buy it from me after I finished cleaning it,
taking it apart and so on, they can make me an offer. If I get no offers I
will sell it in the UK where it will most likely end up back on a Ford (which
is where it belongs some might say).

BUT, for now, I would appreciate some help from the list in finding out what
calibration (jet sizes) listers have DGV & DGAV carbs set out - both 1275,
1500 and 1098, 948 too.

Yes, I realise that you may not know how to find this information out so let
me help. You have to first disconnect the choke butterfly operating rod by
either removing the circlip or a split pin. Once that is done there are only
6 screws holding the top cover on and it is easily removed (if you have an air
filter you would have removed that first. Peering into the float chamber are
2 small brass screw heads - these are the main jets. Checking which side is
for the smaller throttle butterfly (primary) and then larger butterfly
(secondary) remove them one at a time and note the number on the side -
probably 165 & 160. Ignore the big brass screw head that sits near the 2
small ones.

Moving to the top of the carb with the choke butterfly, top cover with floats
attached etc still removed look for 2 brass screw heads close together -
these are the air correctors (for the main jet circuits). Remove each one at
a time noting which is primary and which is secondary - I have no idea what
sizes they will be - the Ford carb I have is 165 primary and 120 secondary.

Underneath the air correctors is a brass head (these are the emulsion tubes
for the main jet circuit) that can either be removed by inverting the carb and
giving it a tap (they drop out) or careful withdraw with a thin screwdriver or
similiar, taking care not to damage them. Probably they will be marked F50 or
F6 (secondary side).

Looking down the barrels themselves is a what amounts to a bar that bisects
the barrel - this is the auxillary venturi. Each one should just pull out but
not that it can go back in a right way or a wrong way. You need to ensure
that the hole in the slot of the carb is the slot that the hole of the aux
vent goes in. The number is likely to be 3.5 but may be 4.5 - primary and
secondary may be the same or different.

The cover can go back on now.

At each side of the carb is a brass head screw, near the top of the carb -
these are the idle jets. Unscrew each one in turn and after withdrawing it
note the size.

GREAT, MANY THANKS FOR YOUR HELP. and,

Note that however the carb was jetted when you got it, it might not be
correctly jetted for the engine in your car. And, even if it was, if you have
fitted a tube header, big valve head or whatever, it might be beneficial to
re-jet.

THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR HELP

Finally, and for reference the 32/36 DGV & DGAV carb is only fractionally
bigger than a pair of 1.25 SUs and a whole lot smaller than a 40 let alone a
45 DCOE.
