Was there a dent in the cover?  Maybe he filled it and forgot to sand before
refitting!  heh heh. Or maybe he threw a rod at some point and decided to test 
the
high strength of Bondo by fixing the block with it.  You may want to look around
some more.  :-)  That's quite a find tho!
