Do your turn signals automatically shut off?

Just trying to figure out if the turn signals in my 1975 Midget are
supposed to automatically shut off after turning the corner (they don't
now).  It's a bad feeling to realize that everyone on the road has
expected you to turn right for the past 5 miles.
If they should shut off, is this easily fixable?
