As Steve correctly points out the wires are for the brake light switch.
This wasn't immediately obvious to me as the car is now right hand drive
and so the pedal box is now on the other side of the engine bay.

I think they are the wires to the brake light switch, which screws into the
brake/clutch pedal box next to the wiper motor. The wires should be green
and green/purple, but the purple could look like brown.
