I am trying to set up my Camshaft timing -- HELP !!!
First time for me! Usually put everything together, lining up timing marks and
all is OK.
This time am using a dial guage to determin TDC and max cam lift on N0. 1
inlet, following David V's book - IAm fitting a Kent 276 cam which has a Cam
centre line (ie max lift) setting of 106 degrees not the normal 110 (1275
engine).
Got TDC OK, using several readings of dial guage, always rotating crank in
normal direction. Can repeat the readings and get exactly the same settings
so I am happy with that.
Finding max lift on cam is not so easy. I think that it is a combination of a
flatter dwell on the cam plus the sticky cam lube used on assembly making the
dial guage happy to rise, but drops back after the peak less smoothly.
Anyway, after a few attempts seem to get a reading using standard sprocket
setting of about112 to 114 degrees + /- 2, which seems a bit late.
I have a stepped woodruff key which sets the cam sprocket to 4 degrees one way
from the slot in the cam shaft. With that fitted I can get a reading of max
cam lift at 108 degrees ATDC, so its not too far out. Problem is DV
recommends giving the cam about 3 degrees of extra advance so the setting
should be 106 - 3 = 103, not 108.

Any suggestions, or is this close enough. It is for road use, so I am not for
the ultimate, but I don't want to set it up wrong and wreck something !

Finally, the cam shaft has a lot of end float. I can see that the (new)
triangular retaining plate will stop the cam coming out too far, but what
controls how far in it goes ? end float is about 0.1 inches. Have fitted new
oil pump and new cam bearings, but am wondering if there is some sort of
spacer that I have forgotten to replace - mind, I don't seem to have any bits
left over !!

Cam turns smothly and dosn't catch on anything.

Guy
