Dave,
I had a similar problem once with a car (American NOT LBC) that I had
overhauled. It turned out that I had switched the crankcase breather with a
vacuum line. Whenever I stepped on the brakes oil would get sucked into the
manifold causing a three state smog alert. A friend of mine who was a real
mechanic diagnosed the problem when I told him there was a sucking noise
around the oil filler cap.
While I'm certain that you would not make such an error I would not say the
same for the DPO. It would be easier to check this than to replace the PCV
valve. Of course that much vacuum in the crankcase would pretty much
guarantee there would be no oil leaking out the rear seal....

You can try a generic PCV inplace of the original, I have one from a
Chrysler on one Sprite but do not know which model Chrysler. It works.
The only thing in the t/dhain cover oil separator is some wire wool, not
steel wool but something like a heavy stainless wire wool pot scrubber.
In fact, that's what I use to replace the old wire, a brand new pot
scrubby from K-mart. It is easier then trying to clean the original and
only costs $1.59 for 2.
Your PCV may have a hole in the diaphram or a bad spring, If the spring
is there and you are sure it has NOT been stretched, there may be a tear
in the rubber diaphram. Motorhead stocks the rubbers, 1-800-527-3140.
