My '73 Midget came with a jack (original, I assume) that has a handle that
you place over the ratchet at the top. The handle ratchets back and forth
in a horizontal plane -- brilliant idea. It lets you alternate hitting the
door, then the door hinge panel with the handle. I found a jack with a
vertical crank in a junkyard, and it works perfectly with no damage to the
car. Since I don't have to move the crank handle back and forth carefully,
it works faster, too. I'm not sure what kind of car it belongs to because
it was in a pile of jacks, but it sounds like what you are talking about
for the 1500/MGB. It lifts the car with a rod that inserts into the
normal jack hole in the side.
