Robert: I've experienced the same problem and was stumped until I tried a coil from a friend's Austin that I knew worked properly. It turned out that the spare coils I tried all suffered from the same malady and broke down when the car warmed-up. If your replacement coil is not proven to be fine then I'd concentrate there.
