polishing Chrome

I've been asked by my A-H Club to display my Sprite with others from the
club at a big Classic Car day.

I'm happy to obligue but it is no show piece.  In particular, the chrome
has seen better days.  Re-chroming is out of the question for the moment
but I was wondering if any of you have any hot tips on making it look its
best.

On the weekend I tried ordinary car polish, it was OK but it is still
looking pretty tired.  In particular, the rear bumper, where the too short
exhaust is, is particularly dark.

All ideas welcome.
