If you are going to prime and leave for a latter date to do further work
you may want to consider applying a two part epoxy primer by brush -- you
will have to sand it before doing other work or applying your filler
primer. You have a compressor so you can spray it --- but it is deadly
material so you may want to talk to a dealer before using it.
We just completed a full restoration on our MGB. Stripped to the bare
metal, replaced metal sections, ground, blasted, and sanded any hint of
rust and then painted the whole care with a large brush (after washing
and treating the bare metal). Epoxy primer has a 7 to 8 day window (you
must re-sand if you are going to put anything on it if you leave it
longer than this period). We then did any filling and block sanding in
small sections (had limited time and worked on it in the evenings)
directly on the primer. Each time we sanded and re-applied epoxy primer
over sanded primer or on bare metal that emerged from sanding then went
on with the evening work. At the time did not have a compressor so used
"pre-values", small air cartridges with glass bottle --- one could mix
small amounts of primer and spray.
The metal primer will have to be sanded and covered by four or five coats
of compatible filler primer and then sealer so the patchwork was not a
problem and let us work on the car as we had time (I say we, the B is my
wife's car). The car was finished with urethrane --- bright yellow!!
Used all PPG products including metal primer, filler primer, guide coats,
sealer, and final coats and evercoat filler --- very very little of the
latter as all metal work was done by a very talented fellow who replaced
the entire center of the car with greater precision and fewer
imperfections that with the original car. Impressed with the PPG products
and took a 35 hour credit course at our local college given by a PPG
representative (not in his capacity as the representative).
For what it is worth we were extremely happy with the final product - the
car is bright enough to glow in the dark....
